YSU Flute Festival 2023
The YSU Flute Festival registration begins at 9:30 am. The day will include a masterclass and recital with guest artist Soo-Kyung Park, Professor of Music at New York University. U.S Navy Fleet Forces Band's Woodwind Quintet in concert.
NEW: This year a new High School Honors Flute Ensemble will perform in the Closing Flute Ensemble Concert (No audition required, just register with Kathryn Umble at kaumble@ysu.edu to join and receive music ahead of time).
Burkart Flutes, Flute Specialists, and Volkwein's Music will be exhibiting throughout the day.

GuestArtist: Soo-Kyung Park
Flutist Soo-Kyung Park enjoys a multi-faceted career as an international soloist, chamber musician, artistic director, producer, and teacher. She was accepted to The Juilliard School, Pre-College Division at the age of 11, where she studied with Bonnie Lichter, and continued her studies at The Juilliard School, where she earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees under the tutelage of Julius Baker and Jeanne Baxtresser.
Ms. Park has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia in many of the world's major concert halls. Past performances include guest soloist with the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra at IBK Hall in Seoul and multiple double concerto performances with Keith Underwood and Carol Wincenc in NYC. She released her first album “Reminiscing” under the SONY Korea label in 2013.
Highly in demand as an instructor, Ms. Park is currently an Artist Professor at New York University and teaches at Manhattan School of Music, Pre-College. She also serves on the faculty of The Consummate Flutist, a masterclass series at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to teaching, she has produced and presented numerous masterclasses and recitals by world-renowned flutists such as Jeanne Baxtresser, Julien Beaudiment, Linda Chesis, Mathieu Dufour, and Karl-Heinz Schutz.
An avid chamber musician, she is artistic director and a founding member of the Musicians of Lenox Hill, an ensemble she has led for annual performances at the Temple of Israel in NYC for two decades. She is also co-founder of NY Flutists, a professional flute ensemble based in NYC.
Faculty Artist: Kathryn Thomas Umble
Kathryn Thomas Umble, Flutist, greatly enjoys performing and sharing the moment with fellow musicians and the listening audience. She also highly values teaching and the process of helping others grow and find their musical “voice”. She is the Associate Professor of Flute at the Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University.

In addition to performing principal flute with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Umble holds the piccolo position with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Erie Philharmonic, Opera Western Reserve, Fontainebleau Festival Orchestra, National Flute Association Gala Orchestra and Toledo Symphony Orchestra. She has been featured in concerto performances with Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble and Bowling Green State University Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.
Umble has presented recitals in Europe and throughout the United States, including venues such as Alice Tully Hall, New York, the Cleveland Institute of Music with members of the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Cleveland Art Museum. Umble is a founding member of Duo Allant, a flute and guitar ensemble - duoallant.com. She was featured a guest artist of the Pittsburgh Flute Club, guest artist in recital with the Aurista Ensemble in New York City, winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions Competition, and she has performed in recital at numerous National Flute Association conventions.
Kathryn Umble has given many master classes and presentations at schools and universities including Penn State University, Bowling Green State University, Michigan State University, Renova Festival, Dana Flute Festival, Pittsburgh Flute Club, University of Florida and National Flute Association conventions. She can be heard on the
Naxos, Dana, GMMC, and Access Labels.
